Why we are passionate
Since February 7th, 1962, the U.S. economic, commercial, and financial blockade of Cuba has economically strangled the island.
The goal of the blockade is to "bring about hunger, desperation, and overthrow of the government" as declared in 1960 by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs Lester Mallory.
The blockade and designation of Cuba as a State Sponsor of Terror has contributed to severely restricted access to food, water, fuel, medicine, and infrastructure materials on the island.
Cuts off Cubans from accessing the international banking system, and severely limits the people's ability to trade freely with other countries.
The blockade was severely intensified under the Trump administration leading to the worst economic and health crisis in the country's history.
The United Nations general assembly has overwhelmingly passed a resolution to end the U.S. blockade of Cuba every year since 1992.
Only Israel has unwaveringly voted alongside the U.S. to maintain the blockade every year.
The U.S. has ignored this UN vote and continued the blockade for 31 years.
The blockade makes it very difficult for South Florida Cubans to travel to Cuba, send remittances, or send material aid to their families across the Florida straits.
Despite the atmosphere of intimidation and violence fostered by establishment politicians in their name, the South Florida Cuban community is deeply polarized over the blockade.
